Launch of new literary prize for BAME writers in the UK

A new literary prize for BAME writers has been launched by authors Sunny Singh and Nikesh Shukla, in partnership with the non-profit organisation Media Diversified and supported by The Author's Club.

The Jhalak Prize for Book of the Year by a Writer of Colour aims to promote and celebrate the achievements and works by British writers of colour. Singh and Shukla will accept entries published in the UK in 2016 across all genres; self-published writers are also eligible.

"The prize will recognize, reward and honour literary talent and achievement by British writers of colour who are often ignored, overlooked and erased," says Shukla, who will be chairing the judges. "I hope it not only stops the patronising suggestions that we aren't taking action but also inspires the publishing industry to look beyond the present narrow margins.”
