Poem of the Week - ‘Fin’ by Luke Kennard

A short and sweet one this week. Well, everyone loves kittens, don’t they?

Fin

A kitten will fight its own reflection,
but stop abruptly around its first birthday.
Up until now I believed that was because the cat
had come to understand what a mirror was,
but now that strikes me as crazy.
Cats can’t even understand gravity,
let alone mirrors. So it is more the case
that the cat knows not to mess
anymore with the glass cat
who uncannily blocks its every attack.

Luke Kennard is the author of several poetry collections. His most recent poetry pamphlet, Planet-Shaped Horse, was published by Nine Arches Press in 2011. This poem can be found in the anthology Maps & Legends: Poems to Find Your Way By, also published by Nine Arches.
