Herbert Lomas

Herbert Lomas was born in the Pennines, served with the infantry from 1943 to 1946, including two years on the North West Frontier of India, and graduated with first-class honours and an MA from Liverpool University. His Letters in the Dark was an Observer Book of the Year and his Contemporary Finnish Poetry won the Poetry Society’s 1991 biennial translation award. A member of the Finnish Academy, he was made Knight First Class, Order of the White Rose of Finland ‘for his services to Finnish Literature’. He died on 9th September 2011, at the age of 87.
