John Barnie’s poetry is known for its compelling blend of elegiac imagination and biological observation. In The Roaring Boys, there is the wry humour and sharp irony of a poet who recognises how the scale of the universe makes us all ‘lower case’ – deities and major poets included.

This new collection also finds the poet at his most confessional, and in dialogue with the dead Canon Davies of St Mary’s, Abergavenny, on the subject of free will, language, bacteria, and the need to accord value to human life.

John Barnie was the editor of Planet from 1990 to 2006. His books include a recent memoir, Tales of the Shopocracy (2009), about life growing up in his father’s sweet and ice-cream shop in Abergavenny. His previous collection with Cinnamon Press is The Forest Under the Sea (2010), and a Selected Poems, Sea Lilies, was published by Seren in 2006. He was on the English language panel of judges for the 2009 Wales Book of the Year award, and is a Fellow of Academi. He lives in Comins Coch, Aberystwyth.
