Matthew David Scott was born in Manchester, 1978, and was raised in the north of the city. After reading English Literature and Philosophy at Sheffield University he spent time living in Edinburgh and back in Manchester before settling in south Wales to teach English at the comprehensive school in Cardiff where he still teaches today. As well as adapting Playing Mercy for the screen, Matthew also writes for the stage. As a founder member of Slung Low Theatre Company, Matthew is involved in a number of ongoing projects and his first play A Verse and a Chorus was produced in 2003 at the Hen and Chickens Theatre, Islington. Following the publication of Playing Mercy, Matthew has been commissioned to write his next novel by the Welsh Books Council and as well as working on this has recently contributed to an anthology of short stories inspired by the music of The Fall published in 2006.
