'Interior 1893' - Vilhelm Hammershoi

Nuque, nuca, nape -
the soft domesticated ns of her neck,
creamy, lit in sunlight coming from

a source we cannot see,
her back to us where she sits
reading perhaps a letter -

loose white blouse, soft hair,
in 'this colourful work', says the catalogue,
where so much colour is carefully missing.

There's no handle on the open door, no clues
to her face, her expression - a muted language
of distance, avoidance, tenderness.

Sue MacIntyre has been a publisher's editor, working mainly on educational books. Her pamphlet Picnic with Seafog and Elephants was published by The Many Press in 2003. Her poems have appeared in magazines and in the anthologies Parents: an anthology of poems by women writers (Enitharmon), Images of Women (Second Light/Arrowhead), and In the Company of Poets (Hearing Eye). She has won prizes for her poems 'Ice Sculpture' and 'Deep Forest' in Scintilla's Open Poetry Competitions.
