He is also the author of four novels, \u003cem\u003eThe Way You Tell Them: A Yarn of the Nineties\u003c\/em\u003e (1990), \u003cem\u003eThe Long Shadows\u003c\/em\u003e (1997), \u003cem\u003eA Funny Old Year\u003c\/em\u003e (2001) and \u003cem\u003eWindows On The Moon\u003c\/em\u003e (2009), as well as two books for children and a critical study of the poet Philip Larkin. His most recent collection of poetry is \u003cem\u003eThe Men Around Her Bed\u003c\/em\u003e (2004).
