Born in 1946 in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, Evgeny Popov moved to Moscow in the 1960s and later graduated from the Moscow Institute of Geology. He then spent many years traveling the width and breadth of Russia. His involvement with the illegal publication of the uncensored literary almanac Metropol in 1981 resulted in his immediate expulsion from the Writers' Union. A long period in literary exile followed until the late 1980s when, under the new conditions of political freedom, he was widely published both at home and abroad. He has written more than two hundred stories and five novels, including The Soul of the Patriot and The Merry-Making in Old Russia, published in 20 countries.
