In early August 991, a ragtag army of Anglo-Saxons joined battle with a party of Viking raiders at Maldon on the coast of Essex. The encounter was recorded in an Old English long poem, though only the work’s middle section survives. Applying a modern perspective to its heroic ideals, J.O. Morgan re-imagines that summer’s day on which some men fought, loyal to the end, and some men fled, fearing the battle was already lost. At Maldon reawakens the events of a thousand years ago with the same verve and precision that distinguished Morgan’s prize-winning Natural Mechanical.

“By looking hard and exactly at particular things in a particular place, it speaks to everyone, everywhere.”
– Andrew Motion on Natural Mechanical

Long Cuts is every bit as fine as Natural Mechanical, in some respects better: sharper descriptions, richer language, more assured versification. I loved it.” – Christopher Reid

J.O. Morgan lives in Scotland. His previous books from CB Editions are Natural Mechanical (2009; ISBN 9780955728594), which won the Aldeburgh First Collection Prize and was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, and Long Cuts (2011; ISBN 9780956735928), which was shortlisted for the Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Award (Poetry).
