This new version of a classic play by one of Tyneside's best-known play-wrights draws on stories by Sid Chaplin to present a living pageant of the North-East's mining communities: their people and traditions.

Alan Plater was born in Jarrow, brought up in Hull, and has been a full-time writer since 1961, with over 200 asorted credits in radio, television, theatre and film. His plays have been performed at many British theatres, including Hull Truck, London's Bush Theatre and the Theatre Royal and Newcastle Playhouse. His TV work has included Z Cars, The Barchester Chronicles, The Beiderbecke Trilogy, Fortunes of War and A Very British Coup. His recent work includes the stage play, Shooting a Legend, the novel Oliver's Travels, seen on TV in a controversial dramatisation, as well as contributions to the BBC TV series Dalziel and Pascoe. President of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain for four years, he now lives in London.
