My Wild Northumbria
Published by Red Squirrel Press
Mike Pratt is a professional environmentalist and naturalist with a passionate interest in the spirit of Nature, wildlife and landscape. He seeks to reconnect himself and other people to it through his experiences, walks, work and writing. He has inhabited much of Northumbria and has been CEO of Northumberland Wildlife Trust for ten years.
Part memoir, part pilgrimage and physical journey, My Wild Northumbria sets out to explore the familiar and unfamiliar parts of old Northumbria, from the Scottish Borders to the Humber and beyond, following a personal ‘mindmap’ of this natural kingdom. It describes the landscapes and wildlife along the way and is inspired throughout by the prehistory and history that still runs like a thread across the north east. From moor to bog, forest to coast, mountain and hill and urban green space and from the head to the heart to the feet of this ancient land, this is a personal insight into ‘wild’ Northumbria today.
‘Only someone who has a passion for the landscape and wildlife of Northumberland could write such a book. The total empathy and perceptive feeling oozes from every page. To those who know this magical region, and those who wish to discover it, this book will bring hours of pleasure and enlightenment as each chapter offers a new insight into things that people never normally see or understand. My Wild Northumbria brings it alive for people to appreciate and discover.’ - Conrad Dickinson
