"John Powell Ward is a highly respected and professional poet, and one would expect any collection of his to be worth reading and contain some remarkable poems. I can strongly recommend The Last Green Year. The title-sequence, twenty-five pages long, takes us through a single year, with poems grouped around the beginning, the end and the four seasons, with spring last. He is good at describing weather, particularly snow and floods, but also the rhythms of the human year; so in autumn crowds of students flock to school and university and a host of brightly-coloured books, like leaves, jump off the shelves.
