DEDALUS, DOPPERGÄNGER AND KITCH ARE ON THE RoC PRIZE 2019 SHORTLIST!

Three of our books have made the Republic of Consciousness Prize 2019 shortlist!

The Republic of Consciousness, sponsored this year by the University of East Anglia and the TLS, and supported by Arts Council England, aims to promote and support the work of small presses in the UK and Ireland. With their Prize for Small Presses, now in its third edition, they want to celebrate and reward the best fiction published by publishers with fewer than 5 full-time employees.

 

Previously awarded publishers are Fitzcarraldo Editions in 2017 for their Counternarratives by John Keene, and Influx Press in 2018 for their Attrib. and other stories by Eley Williams. This year, three of our publishers are in the running: Henningham Family Press, Istros Books, and Peepal Tree Press!

Also The British Book Awards Small Press of the Year 2019 regional finalists for London, Henningham Family Press present us an iconoclastic tribute to James Joyce’s Ulysses: Dedalus by Chris McCabe. Following Ulysses’ chronicles, the author traces Stephen Dedalus’ day on 17th June 1904. While the protagonist wakes up hungover with winnings in his borrowed trousers to settle his scores and debts, Leopold Bloom wakes up with plans for him.

Istros Books bring to English-speaking readers Doppergänger by prolific and award-winning Croatian novelist Daša Drndić, translated by Celia Hawkesworth and S. D. Curtis. This intriguing book consists of two short stories which mirror each other, capably revisiting the theme of the ‘double’: ‘Arthur and Isabella’ and ‘Pupi’, which deal with themes such as, among other ones, loneliness, personal and imposed beliefs.

Peepal Tree Press present Kitch by Anthony Joseph: the unique fictional biography of Trinidad-born musician and calypso icon Aldwyn Roberts, known as ‘Lord Kitchener’, author of the song ‘London Is the Place for Me’. The author of the book met the famous artist once in 1984 in Queen’s Park Savannah, when Lord Kitchener explained to Joseph his musical vision. This book recreates and reimagines Kitch’s world.

 

While we wait for the winner to be announced soon, we congratulate all the brilliant publishers and authors who made the short- and longlist. Well done small presses!
