Indie bookshops embrace Civilized Saturday
To counter the mayhem of Black Friday this year, many independent bookshops will be taking part in a Civilized Saturday, promising ‘civilized shopping, great books, great people’. The inaugral event, which began with a suggestion from the Booksellers Association, will be taking place on the 28th November. It will provide a calm atmosphere in contrast to Black Friday and each bookshop will be holding its own unique celebrations.
The Bookworm of Selkirk, a newly opened independent bookshop specialising in children’s literature, based in the Scottish Borders, will be offering food, drinks, raffles, and a Famous Five Tea Party.
Bookends of Fowey, based in Cornwall, will be giving customers 10% off all stock.
Shropshire’s Wenlock Books will be providing prosecco and an afternoon tea with coffee and cake as well as a book-curating and book-wrapping service, presumably in anticipation of the Christmas season.
Civilized Saturday is a wonderful and innovative idea, not to mention much needed after the chaos of Black Friday: let’s hope that the tradition can continue for many more years!
Civilized Saturday is a brilliant idea; thank you, Inpress! This is a refreshing counterpoint to the cynical Black Friday promotions that are pouring into my inbox.
