Charles Leftwich was born in 1953, and grew up in Natal, South Africa. He studied at St. John’s College, Cambridge, where he won the Chancellor’s Medal for an English poem (won by Tennyson in his time) with ‘Cadenzas’, included in this collection. His poems have been widely published in journals in the UK, South Africa and the US. A university lecturer turned journalist, he won the South African Environment Journalist of the Year award in 1991, before working freelance in London. He died in 2009.
