Mary Noonan’s debut collection is characterised by an intense musicality and a determinedly outward look. Its themes range from music, visual art and myth to travels abroad and the magic of family and friendship. There are poems which treat the loss of loved ones with great sensitivity, alongside very personal translations of Baudelaire and de Nerval – all written in the same enduring tones of celebration, wonder and survival.

Soon she will be darting over miles
of dust track, past ghost shack and scrub,
glancing off rock cacti that do not sink roots
but run feelers lightly over dunes, cup rain
as it slides through spines.
(from ‘Swallow’)

Mary Noonan lives in Cork, and works as a lecturer in French at University College Cork. Her poems have featured in anthologies like Best Irish Poetry 2010 and The Alhambra Poetry Calendar: 365 Classic and Contemporary Poems. In 2007, she was selected to take part in the Poetry Ireland Introductions series in Dublin; she also read at the Poetry Hearings festival in Berlin in 2009. The manuscript of The Fado House was awarded the Listowel Poetry Collection Prize in 2010.
