Collection: Phyllis Shand Allfrey
Phyllis Shand Allfrey (1908-1986) was born in Dominica — like her compatriot and friend Jean Rhys — into a once wealthy white planter family. Leaving her birthplace as a young woman, she travelled to the US and then to England where she became a Fabian socialist. She returned to Dominica to co-found the island’s first political party and later became a Minister in the short-lived West Indies Federation.
