Ralph Oates was born in Hornchurch, Essex. He was an amateur boxer before he started writing books about the sport, and is now recognised as the leading compiler of boxing quiz books in the country. His most recent book is Aspects of Heavyweight Boxing (Valley Press, 2012). He was a contributor to The British Boxing Board of Control Yearbook for 18 years, and is currently Boxing Consultant for Guinness World Records. Ralph is regularly called upon as a trusted source of boxing facts, most recently in 2012 for the BBC’s National Lottery programme Who Dares Wins.
