Salmon Poetry

Salmon Poetry was established in 1981 with the publication of The Salmon, a journal of poetry and prose, as an alternative voice in Irish literature. Since then it has produced over 300 volumes of poetry, and Salmon has become one of the most important publishers in the Irish literary world. Salmon's catalogue includes  initial works by Irish poets Rita Ann Higgins, Theo Dorgan, Moya Cannon, Mary O'Donnell, Eamonn Wall, Mary O'Malley, Eva Bourke, Kevin Higgins, Dave Lordan, Janice Fitzpatrick-Simmons and Gerard Donovan, alongside a wide range of international poets.

 

 
 
 
Who’s who on your team? Jessie Lendennie is the founder and Managing Editor of Salmon Poetry. She has commissioned and published over 600 books of poetry and prose, and 26 issues of The Salmon International Literary Journal.  A poet herself, her prose poem Daughter was published in 1988, and reissued with new poems in 2001. In 1990, The Salmon Guide to Poetry Publishing appeared and in 1992 by The Salmon Guide to Creative Writing in Ireland. She has also edited Salmon: A Journey in Poetry, 1981-2007 (Salmon, 2007) and Poetry: Reading it, Writing it, Publishing it (Salmon, 2009) and Dogs Singing: A Tribute Anthology (2010).  Her poetry collection, Walking Here, appeared in 2011. In 2016 she compiled and edited ‘Even The Daybreak: 35 Years of Salmon Poetry’ She is currently working on a memoir, To Dance Beneath the Diamond Sky.
Siobhán Hutson is Salmon's book production manager & administrator.  As well as her administrative duties, she designs the Salmon books and promotional material as well as maintaining the Salmon website. To date, she has designed over 300 Salmon titles. She has a First Class Honours degree in Film, Television and Radio Studies from Staffordshire University, UK.

 

What events do you get involved with?  The Association of Writers and Writing Programs  (AWP) Conference & Bookfair is our main North American event each year. Over 12,000 attendees and 800 small presses and journals take part. Salmon was shortlisted for the AWP Small Press Publisher of the Year in 2015.  Regular venue/festivals in Ireland include the Ennistymon Book Town Festival, Co. Clare; Cuirt International Festival of Literature, Galway; O’bheal, Cork; Listowel Writers’ Week, Listowel, Co. Kerry, The Irish Writers’ Centre, Dublin;  Poetry Ireland, Dublin, and Over The Edge, Galway. 

 What do you enjoy the most about publishing? I love contributing to the crucial body of poetry in the world, and I particularly love the discovery of new voices. Reading manuscripts takes a special concentration and can be overwhelmingly intense, but it’s so wonderful to get lost in the work of an captivating poet and to be responsible for bringing that voice to as wide an audience as possible, and, thanks to Siobhan Hutson, in as beautiful a presentation as possible. Of course, much of publishing involves administration, and sheer grind, but, after all, we are fulfilling a deep need for the emotional health of humanity.

Have you got any office animals? My dogs are Big Jack, a border collie, and his dad, Zeke, a kind of mixed collie type.  Zeke shadows me everywhere and Big Jack hangs out downstairs in The Salmon Bookshop.  

 Where is your nearest bookshop? Downstairs!  Salmon Poetry’s office is part of the premises of our bookshop, The Salmon Bookshop & Literary Centre.  This is a relatively new Salmon venture (2012). We have a huge selection of fiction and a wide range of poetry books (our own and other publishers). The premises has a beautiful garden and we have fabulous readings and events there in the spring and summer. We also have a writing residency program, and run workshops! 

If you could meet one author or poet, dead or alive, who would you choose and why? Really hard question (and I’m sure most writers and publishers would agree!).  I think… Walt Whitman, for the originally, philosophy, beauty, relevance, depth and immediacy of his poems. For his awareness of how past and present combine..
