Our November Independent Bookshop of the Month is Pickled Pepper books! Pickled Pepper Books is a specialist children's bookshop situated in Crouch End. As well as stocking a fantastic array of books for young people they al
so hold regular interactive events for children to get involved with. We spoke to Urmi Merchant who is the co-owner of Pickled Pepper for a little chat!
- How did Pickled Pepper Books begin?
We were established as a specialist children’s bookshop, cafe and events space by parents Steven Pryse and Urmi Merchant in 2012, aiming to provide a family friendly environment in which to experience the tactile nature of choosing books for and with kids.
- What is your favourite part of bookselling?
When families and children come back raving about books we've recommended - oh and opening a box of books!
- Do you have any exciting plans for the future?
Our staff team have been busy creating a children’s theatre space, hidden away, at the back of our bookshop. From September 2018 we will be hosting new and exciting small scale shows at the weekends. Families will be able to experience everything from baby sensory theatre to spoken word for older kids. We will be showcasing new and emerging theatre in a cosy setting where you can expect lots of audience interaction and a perfect frst experience of theatre for children. In addition there will be even more author/illustrator events at the weekends and more preschool activities in the week.
- If you weren’t running a bookshop, what would you be doing?
Travelling the world with my family!
- Where is your favourite place to read?
In the garden with the sun out and listening to music.
- What is your favourite children’s book… AND WHY?
Asterix, Pippi Longstocking, Murder Most Unladylike - all childhood favourites (our 12 year old has a choice here too!)
