Alan Plater was a full-time writer from 1961 until his death in 2010, with almost 300 credits in radio, television, theatre and films ñ plus 6 novels, occasional journalism, broadcasting and teaching. His television career began with a string of single plays as well as contributions to the pioneering Z Cars series. Subsequent work has included Barchester Chronicles, The Beiderbecke Trilogy, Fortunes of War, A Very British Coup, Misterioso, Dogginí Around, The Last of the Blonde Bombshells, Belonging and The Last Will and Testament of Billy Two-Sheds. Recent work for the theatre has included the highly enjoyable musical play, Blonde Bombshells of 1943.

This book brings together his love of jazz, which he has brought often into his work for theatre and television, and his memoirs as a writer, told with the wit and mastery of words that characterise all his work.
